BREAK FREE! Global Wave of Direct Action to Keep It In the Ground

A global wave of non-violent direct action to demand that oil, gas and coal be kept in the ground has begun. On May 3rd, over 300 activists occupied the largest open cast coal mine in the United Kingdom for 12 hours, and no arrests were made! Many activists in the Break Free movement are contending that they are not law-breakers, but in fact, law-enforcers of the Public Trust Doctrine -- ensuring a livable planet for future generations.

Mass actions are taking place in:

Anacortes, WA

Albany, NY

Chicago area (Whiting, IN)

Denver area (Lakewood, CO)

Los Angeles, CA

Washington, DC

Break Free organizers have also created a system that notifies you when actions first occur and how to follow them online so that you can be a “digital witness” to events as they are taking place across the globe.

Advance Human Rights

Advancing the human rights of communities affected by climate change is a moral imperative.

As people of faith and conscience, we have a responsibility to defend our home and care for each other, working to be in solidarity with those most impacted by pollution, environmental destruction, increasingly severe natural disasters, and more. We must take action to shift, advance, and grow.

We envision a future where those who disproportionately bear the burdens of climate change are leaders in the search for solutions, and their rights and needs are the bedrock of our collective climate justice work.

We commit to forming 500 new partnerships with people in affected communities that advance human rights through education, advocacy, financial support and direct participation.

We can prepare by learning who is already acting to address suffering and advance rights in our local and global communities, and exploring how we can follow the leadership of people from frontline affected communities.

We will act by committing to one or more of the actions below.
