Committed to Action

Commit2Respond believes that saving our biosphere is possible, but it will take a paradigm shift and a revolution of values to get there. Our framework is simple: to meet this challenge, we will need to SHIFT to a low carbon future, ADVANCE the human rights of affected communities, and GROW the climate justice movement.

By the beginning of Climate Justice Month, an interactive section of this website will launch where we can all learn about suggested ways to take action, log and track our collective commitments, and connect with others who are taking action in similar ways.

In the meanwhile, here is a sneak peek of our vision:

SHIFT to a low carbon future

We envision a world in which energy is used sustainably, the world’s resources are treasured and shared, and resilient and democratic support systems exist to help all of creation survive climate change.

We commit to 1,000 individuals or households and 250 congregations or organizations taking a carbon pledge to reduce their emissions by 20% in the next two years.

We can prepare by finding out the sources of the energy we use and exploring the repercussions of its use for the climate and people.

We will take action by:

> Taking a carbon pledge to reduce our carbon pollution 20% in two years.
> Creating or joining voluntary carbon tax and tithing programs.
> Divesting from fossil fuels and investing in community sustainability.
> Engaging in SHIFT through the Green Sanctuary program.

ADVANCE the human rights of affected communities

We envision a future where those who disproportionately bear the burdens of climate change are leaders in the search for solutions, and their rights and needs are the bedrock of our collective climate justice work.

We commit to forming 500 new partnerships with people in affected communities that advance human rights through education, advocacy, financial support and direct participation.

We can prepare by learning who is already acting to address suffering and advance rights in our local and global communities, and exploring how we can follow the leadership of people from frontline affected communities.

We will take action by:

> Building or deepening a partnership with organizations active in local affected communities.
> Supporting affected communities in another part of the world as an advocate or sponsor.
> Serving and learning shoulder-to-shoulder with affected communities through a UU College of Social Justice faith-based learning experience.
> Engaging in ADVANCE through the Green Sanctuary program.
> More ways! (share your ideas)

GROW the climate justice movement

We envision a movement fed by hope, love and nonviolence that amplifies the voices of affected communities, counters oppressions, and inspires people everywhere to join the urgent creative struggle to bring about climate justice.

We commit to 5,000 people joining a new Commit2Respond Climate Activist Network to collaborate on climate justice organizing efforts, policy advocacy, and corporate responsibility campaigns.

We can prepare by learning more and educating others about the goals and framework of climate justice, as well as the intersections and shared ground between different struggles for justice.

We will take action by:

> Organizing or supporting a local community education event or collaboration leading to action.
> Joining the new Commit2Respond Climate Activist Network (to come).
> Joining or uplifting young adult leadership in the movement.
> Engaging in GROW through the Green Sanctuary program.
> More ways! (share your ideas)
